Julia Weiss was born in India, adopted when she was 4 months old and grew up in Simsbury. Artur Klepacki was born in Poland, moved to the United States when he was 5 and grew up in New Britain. They met in September 2013 … in cyberspace.
“I saw his picture on match and ‘liked’ it,” says Julia, who admits, “I didn’t even read his profile.” Artur responded to her “like” and by the end of their first date at Sliders in Plainville, which lasted ninehours, it was readily apparent that, though born a world apart, they’d met their match.
“We come from families with the same values,” explains Julia. Both are Catholic, spend a lot of time at the gym, enjoy hiking, football (though she is all about the New York Giants and he a fan of the Minnesota Vikings) and are, as Julia puts it, “very into wine.” In fact, by the time Artur popped the question at Gouveia Vineyards in Wallingford in July 2015, the pair had already visited every one of the 33 wineries and vineyards on the Connecticut Wine Trail at the time. The goal for their Sept. 17, 2016, nuptials? To highlight both Polish and American traditions. The ceremony at Sacred Heart Church in New Britain included a reading in Polish; both sets of parents blessed the newlyweds in a Polish ceremony complete with bread (that they never hunger or be in need), salt (that they learn to gracefully cope with life’s struggles) and wine (that they never thirst and live a life of good health and cheer shared in the company of friends); Artur’s groom’s cake, made by his cousin at KA Cutie Cakes in Bristol, was a Polish flag; and there was, but of course, Belvedere vodka to toast with and polkas aplenty for their reception at the Hartford/Windsor Marriott.
As for the bride, “I was the ‘American’ part,” says Julia — who decided to add a pop of color to her day by way of that most American of fruits: the apple. Granny Smith apples, to be exact. “I thought the color would be great for fall,” recalls the bride, and so bright-and-shiny green apples shared space with white hydrangeas in centerpieces and on a striking cake designed by Creative Cakes by Donna in Haddam.
Personal touches included Julia’s late grandmother’s blue topaz brooch pinned to her stunner of a bouquet from Agnes Corr in Southington (check out those Royal Wedding poppies!); the couple honored the bride’s brother, who is severely disabled, with a donation to HARC Inc. in Hartford in lieu of favors; and, because “my husband loves cars,” says Julia, the newlyweds traveled in style in a distinguished 1962 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud.
