Amanda Sluss, 43, and Cliff Gilchrist, 44, met through a mutual friend in September 2012. Both Georgia graduates, they joined a group of fellow alums at a bar in Cool Springs to watch the first football game of the season. The next weekend the group decided to gather again, but this time Sluss and Gilchrist had better opportunity to get to know each other.
“There was less people, so we were able to talk a little bit more freely,” she said. And she really enjoyed his company.

“I was interested when I first met him,” she said. “He's hysterical. He's got the best sense of humor, and I can tell you that the entire group of us watching that game the first time that I met him, everybody was in tears laughing.”
Talking Titans, she mentioned she had only been to a few games while he has been a season ticket holder since the franchise began. They made plans to go to the next home game, but it was going to be weeks before it happened. He ended up calling her that night to tell her he didn’t want to wait that long to see her again.
“A week and a half after we met the first time we went on our first date, and the rest is history,” she said.
The proposal
After three and a half years of dating, Gilchrist proposed on April 30, 2016, and managed to get their tiny white cat in on the action. The cat, Alex, had heart disease and in his short life loved to hop up into bed with the couple and purr happily every morning.
That day Gilchrist put a red collar on Alex with something special attached — an engagement ring. Alex played his part perfectly, hopping up on the bed and purring for Sluss. She noticed the collar, but the diamond was hidden in the cat’s white fur.
Gilchrist finally unsnapped the collar and she could see the ring. She gladly said yes.
Unfortunately, Alex the cat died just a few months later, in July, but will always be a part of their love story.
“He's part of that memory forever,” she said.
The two were first married on Oct. 1 with a surprise backyard wedding for 25 close friends and family. Then, later that month, the two escaped to Aruba for 10 days, where they had their intended beach ceremony before returning to Nashville and hosting a small reception.
“It did not take me very long after meeting him for the first time that I knew he was the one,” she says. “I'm happy that we're official, that I can call him my husband. I knew that day would come. We had developed a fantastic friendship as we started dating and that was just another thing that let me know that this is the person that I'm supposed to be with.”
Sluss is the senior public relations manager and assistant vice president of Fifth Third Bank. Gilchrist is an Overton graduate and runs Nashville Billiard and Patio with his brothers, the business his father started in 1953.
“He makes everything we do fun,” she said. “We have such a great time together. We have developed this really wonderful friendship.”
