Ruhi Singh, former Miss India and the winner of Miss Universal Peace and Humanity, never missed an opportunity to get on stage when she was a child. From dancing to poetry and theatre, Ruhi was a front runner in extracurricular activities. And that explains why the Rajasthan girl was interested in beauty pageants and acting.
"It feels amazing when I make my parents proud and bring a smile on their faces with the kind of work I do. My world revolves around them," says Ruhi, who is excited about the release of her first Tamil film, Bongu. The movie, directed by debutant Taj, has Natarajan Subramaniam in the lead. Talking about the movie, she says, "I got a call from the makers and that's when I came to Chennai. I gave a look test and was very impressed with the script. The story has several twists and turns and involves a lot of cars, which are one of my weaknesses. I have been a fan of Tamil movies and admire the fact that their scripts and stories are always different. And as for the language, I didn't really find it difficult because I communicated with a lot of non-Hindi speaking girls when I took part in my pageants. I always enjoyed learning a new language, and I think I can understand Tamil and Tamilians well now. I worked quite hard for my role in the movie. I used to sit with the assistant director, to make sure I got my dialogues and the pronunciation right."
Working with Natty has been a learning experience for Ruhi. "It is fun to be around him and he is such a good actor, and most importantly, has a keen eye for lighting, camera work, etc. It has been quite a learning experience for me. The director too, was very supportive and helpful. And he's really cute, he would try and speak to me in Hindi and I would laugh," she tells us. Ruhi is looking forward to more work in the Tamil industry.
"I have made a lot of new friends in the city and know all the places where I can hang out. I have started understanding the language, too. I want to do roles that will make an impact and take up scripts that are interesting. The movie should make sense to me and I should be able to relate to it. Tamil cinema is famous for its different kinds of roles and characters," she says.
Ruhi, who is trained in western and classical dance, started her Bollywood career with Madhur Bhandarkar's Calendar Girls, followed by Ishq Forever. She is also currently working on an untitled Hindi project. "I cannot divulge too much, but it is an out-and-out action movie and I play an agent in it," says the martial arts expert. Interestingly, Ruhi has also worked on an international documentary film in 2012, titled The World Before Her. "It was all thanks to the beauty pageants I participated in that I got the international exposure. And Anurag Kashyap was the one who launched the movie in India. He is my mentor and someone I can call at any point of time to get some motivation and advice," says the actress.
Having won The Miss India title and the Miss Universal Peace and Humanity title in 2014, Ruhi has a lot to share with upcoming models in the country. "It changed my life. It gave me an opportunity to be confident and meet so many different kinds of people from around the world. It takes a lot to speak in front of so many people and win an international title. I think it is the best thing to have happened to my life," she gushes. Ruhi calls herself a workaholic and says that she's got a long way to go. "I can work 24x7. There is so much more work that I want to do as an actress. From winning a beauty pageant, representing the country internationally, and the movies, to be chosen as one of the most desirable women in India, to presenting awards, etc, there is so much I have done and there is so much more to do. All these things have changed me a lot, but it has been a very exciting journey for me.
