In recent months there's been a surge in popularity surrounding beauty tutorials for monolids - eye shapes that don't have a natural 'hood' or crease. For someone to tune into a make-up video only to discover the gorgeous look won't work on them must be incredibly frustrating, so we're here to share the best ways to embrace and enhance your eyes with ease.
Priming the eyelid is extremely important before tackling any finish as you want the product to stay neat and in place rather than turning into a smudge over your peepers! Choose a long-lasting option, like bareMinerals Prime Time Eyelid Primer or Benefit's Stay Don't Stray Eye Shadow Primer for the best results and let it dry/settle before taking any further steps.
We recommend contouring around the outside of your eyes and along your nose to add more depth and shape to your face too, and give some attention to your eyebrows as they are the best way to bring out your features. Tidy the hairs up and make them beautifully bold.
Now it's time to tackle the lid itself. Smoky eyes aren't out of the question, but it's how you apply the shadows which is key here, as you don't want to follow the traditional route. Instead of applying different shades vertically, take a horizontal approach and begin by adding a thin layer of the darkest shade along your lash line at the bottom of the lid, which will immediately open things up more. Then, gradually add a medium shade above complete with the lightest colour at the top. Blend in to make the transition natural and see an immediate difference to your appearance - you won't feel insecure about your monolids at all!
If going for one colour don't pick anything too dark, but make sure it's a shade that stands out enough to make a difference. We suggest palette shadows, not loose, as it's neater to apply and you can even try dabbing it on using your fingertip for accuracy rather than a brush.
You don't necessarily need to wear eyeshadow though as you can make just as much of a statement with just mascara. But try curling your lashes and applying a primer first to really elongate things.
